Customizing the Length of a Chain

Now that we've established a way to easily link and unlink the ends of a
chain, we can proceed to a more confusing issue: How to remove or
add length to a chain. This process can be more difficult than it first
appears, so let's establish some basic rules regarding chains:

1) All conventional chains with 2 male ends designed for joining with a
"master link" will ALWAYS have an ODD number of "holes" before
the "master link" is added. (see below) In this case there are 5 holes.

                                                              Fig 1

2) A conventional chain can only be shortened or lengthened in 2 hole
increments! (discounting the master link) That is, you can remove or
    add 2, 4, 6, etc. holes. You can't remove or add 1, 3, 5, etc. holes!

If you discover that you need a chain with an EVEN number of holes
before the master link is added, (see #1) or you must shorten or lengthen
a chain by an ODD number of holes, (see #2) you will need some special
chain parts. That's next!

There are 3 special parts which, when used in combination or individually,
allow you to construct a chain of any length with any number of holes.

The "master link" This is a female-female connector. As previously
noted, this connector can be removed and installed
as often as necessary. It adds 1 hole when installed.

The "offset link"   This is a male-male connector. Coupled to the chain
at both ends by a master link, this "offset link" adds
2 holes to the chain in addition to the 2 holes added
by the 2 master links. In total, this adds 4 holes!

The "single link"  This is a male-male connector. Coupled to the chain
at both ends by a master link, this "single link" adds
1 hole to the chain in addition to the 2 holes added
by the 2 master links. In total, this adds 3 holes!

***Notice that there is no way to add 2 holes. AH, but there is if you
know how! See some examples of how these parts are used. Examples
