z-Turbo Test Report
(2/25/03)

Although I don't make a habit of reviewing kids scooter,
I've decided to make
an exception. The z-Turbo seems to be an excellent entry into the world of
electric scooters, particularly for lightweight adults and children. At less
than
$230 you'll have yourself a great little e-scooter with all the basics.
As always, my dynamometer tests are performed with a
simulated 165 pound
rider. Taking this into account, you can expect actual results to be somewhat
better than those reported here, especially with a child rider on board.
The z-Turbo comes ready to ride right out of the box,
although you should
certainly plug in the 2A charger prior to taking it out for a spin. If you
decide
to install the removable seat first, expect a five minute (no tools) task. As
you unpack the scooter you'll find a tire pump, tools, charger, and a decent
instruction booklet containing all you'll need to know to operate the unit.
Power is provided by a pair of 9A/hr SLA batteries driving
a 200W brushed
DC motor via an external controller and twist grip throttle. Power transmission
is through a standard (replaceable) 15mm toothed drive belt. Dyno tests
indicate a top speed (with 165 lb rider) of 11.5
MPH. The average speed
for the entire test run was 10.8 MPH. Ideal for kids.
Maximum continuous run time at full speed
(with 165 lb rider) was just under
38 minutes and a total of 7 miles. Expect something closer to 10 miles
range with a 100 lb child.
Some additional items: The z-Turbo uses standard 8"
(200x50) tires and
tubes, so locating a replacement will be easy. The folding mechanism is
consistent with other z-Scooter products, that is, easy to operate and
secure. A standard rear band brake is employed, and works well. A multi-
position handlebar system allows quick and solid setting of height for
tall and short riders. Factory service and warranty assistance are provided
by the staff at z-Scooter.
